How We Designed Our Porch for Passive Solar — The Geometry Behind the Comfort
The front porch on the NZEL solar farmhouse isn't decorative. Well — it's also decorative. But primarily it's an engineered element that does real thermal work for the house, and the specific depth of seven feet wasn't chosen because it looked right. It was calculated to optimize the solar geometry for our latitude in Waxhaw, North Carolina.
The calculation starts with sun angles. At 35 degrees north latitude — approximately where Waxhaw sits — the summer solstice sun reaches a peak altitude of about 78 degrees above the southern horizon. The winter solstice sun peaks at about 32 degrees. A porch overhang needs to be deep enough to shade south-facing windows when the sun is at its summer peak, while still allowing sunlight to enter when the sun is at its winter low.
The math: if your south-facing windows extend from floor to ceiling, and your porch overhang sits at ceiling height, the required porch depth is approximately the window height divided by the tangent of the summer sun altitude. For our ceiling heights and our latitude, that calculation pointed to a porch depth of six to seven feet. We went with seven to give a comfortable margin and provide genuinely usable outdoor space.
The real-world result is exactly what the geometry predicted. Our December 13th photograph shows deep winter sun reaching well into the living room in the afternoon. In summer, those same windows sit in the shade cast by the porch overhang during peak heat hours. The porch does real work without consuming a single watt of electricity.
