How Passive Solar Heating Works in Winter — And Why Your Porch Is the Key
There's a moment every winter in our solar farmhouse when you really understand passive solar. It's mid-December, maybe 38 degrees outside, and the afternoon sun is streaming through the south-facing windows and pooling on the living room floor. The heat pump hasn't run in hours. The house is comfortable not because of any mechanical system — but because the house was designed to collect the sun's warmth.
Passive solar heating relies on three elements: south-facing glass to admit sunlight, thermal mass to absorb and store the heat, and careful control of when sunlight is admitted versus blocked. The control mechanism — the part most people don't think about — is the porch overhang.
The sun's angle changes dramatically between summer and winter. In summer it passes nearly overhead. In winter it stays low in the southern sky. A porch overhang of the right depth takes advantage of this geometry: the low winter sun sends sunlight under the overhang and through the windows, warming the interior. The high summer sun causes the overhang to cast a shadow over those same windows, blocking unwanted heat gain.
Our seven-foot-deep porch was designed around this geometry. The December 13th photo on our website shows exactly what this looks like in practice: afternoon sun stretching deep into the living room on a day that would make a conventionally designed home run its heat all afternoon. In our home, the sun was doing the heating for free.
The financial impact accumulates quietly. Every degree your house gains from sunlight through south-facing windows is a degree the heat pump doesn't have to provide.
