Electric Vehicles + Solar Home = True Energy Independence
A net zero energy home gets you most of the way to genuine energy independence. But there's one piece most households are missing — the vehicle in the driveway. Transportation accounts for a massive share of the average family's energy spending and carbon output. Add an electric vehicle charged by your solar panels and you close the loop entirely.
The math is straightforward. The average American drives roughly 15,000 miles per year. An efficient EV uses about 3 to 4 miles per kilowatt hour. At 15,000 miles per year, you're looking at roughly 4,000 kilowatt hours of annual charging demand. A well-sized solar array like ours — generating up to 74 kilowatt hours on peak days — can absorb that additional demand and still maintain net zero status.
The key is when you charge. The ideal scenario is charging during peak solar production hours — late morning through early afternoon — rather than overnight. When your panels are generating more electricity than the house needs and the battery is topped off, that surplus can flow directly into your vehicle. You're literally driving on sunshine, with no utility cost involved.
Our solar farmhouse was designed with EV charging in mind. The electrical system includes a Level 2 charging circuit, and on good solar days we charge the vehicle during daylight hours while the house runs normally and still exports energy to the grid. It's not magic — it's just a system where all the pieces work together.
